Kenya fishing expedition — this is the first full video and trip report from Lamu Island, East Africa. One of the most remote and least pressured GT fisheries in the world, documented by Sparidae Fishing Expeditions. Monster GT above 50kg, dogtooth tuna and a coastline that almost nobody fishes. This was our first film from East Africa — and it set the bar high.
Lamu Island sits on the northern Kenyan coast where the Indian Ocean pushes strong currents through channels, offshore banks and reef systems. The Kenya fishing expedition here is driven by tidal movement — when the current runs, bait stacks and GT follow. Popping was the primary technique, with surface strikes happening throughout the day. Dogtooth tuna responded well to deep jigging on the same structure.

Lamu is one of the most underexplored GT fisheries in the world. Unlike the Maldives or Seychelles, very few expedition operators run trips here — which means the fish are uneducated, the reefs are intact and Kenya fishing expedition pressure is minimal. GT here are not selective — they are aggressive, fast and heavy. The +50kg fish in this video are not the exception. They are what Lamu produces when you find the right bank on the right tide.
October marks the end of the short rains in Kenya — water clarity improves, wind drops and surface conditions settle. For a Kenya fishing expedition, this is one of the most reliable windows of the year. Bait concentrates on the current edges, GT are active on the surface from early morning and the offshore banks produce dogtooth throughout the day.
