Why Lamu I Is One of the World's Best GT Fishing Destinations?

Lamu Island fishing sits in a unique geographical position. The reef systems along this stretch of Kenya’s coast consistently produce aggressive topwater action and powerful Giant Trevally.

To the north, Somalia’s remote coastline remains largely unexploited. This vast, undisturbed marine zone functions as a natural reservoir remain minimally exploited and lt has helped preserve fish stocks and migration routes across the area.

These factors produce the kind of fish density and quality. The result is a Lamu fishing experience that feels genuinely wild. Lamu itself provides a safe, well-structured base. Is one of the best places to stay in all Africa and many celebrities have their houses in the area.

Remote access to exceptional water, combined with the stability and infrastructure of coastal Kenya — a combination that very few GT destinations in the world can offer. It remains one of the few destinations in the world — alongside Oman and Socotra — where landing a GT exceeding 50 kg is a real possibility. These fish are not common anywhere, but the structure, current and  around Lamu create the opportunities for exceptional specimen.

Target Species & Techniques

Lamu jigging session

Lamu fishing is defined by power, aggression and unpredictability. The reef systems here hold a concentration of large predators that rewards technical anglers and punishes lazy ones. Every session is different — and every serious strike demands your full attention.

Monster GT popping in Lamu are the main objective of this expedition. Fish in the 20–35 kg range are regularly encountered, and landing a GT over 40 kg is absolutely realistic under the right tidal conditions. Specimens exceeding 50 kg are rare anywhere in the world, but Lamu remains one of the few places in the Indian Ocean where this possibility genuinely exists with Oman and Socotra.

Groupers on jigging:  When the goal is targeting larger GT, the focus remains almost exclusively on popping. However, whenever the objective shifts towards diversity and high catch volume, jigging becomes a key technique.

Vertical jigging between 60 and 100 metres targets these structure-oriented predators. When the GT topwater slows, the jigging rods come out. These groupers can reach impressive sizes, with specimens exceeding 60 kg inhabiting certain reef systems.

The combination of monster GT,sailfish, wahoo, giant kingfish and mixed trevally species complete the picture. Current lines bring pelagic action to the reef edges during the productive season windows. No two days of fishing in Lamu are exactly the same — the variety is part of what makes this destination exceptional.

Physically, this is a demanding fishery. Heavy popping gear, long casting sessions, discipline and focus. It is not a casual fishing trip — it is a committed offshore GT expedition.

Season and Conditions

Lamu fishing follows a clear seasonal rhythm shaped by the Indian Ocean’s monsoon system. Understanding these windows is essential to planning a successful expedition — and it’s exactly what separates a productive trip from a frustrating one.

The Prime Season: October to Mid-April

The main Lamu fishing season runs from October through mid-April, when the northeast trade winds — known locally as the Kaskazi — create the tidal conditions that push baitfish into the reef systems and trigger aggressive feeding behavior from the ocean’s top predators.

This is the window when Lamu fishing reaches its peak intensity. Offshore banks become productive, current movement concentrates fish over structure, and surface activity can be relentless on the right tidal phase. During these months, the full range of techniques becomes viable: popping, jigging, casting and trolling — all producing results across different reef zones and depth ranges.

A Note on Mid-December to Late January

Within the prime season, the period from mid-December to late January deserves special attention. The Kaskazi wind strengthens considerably during these weeks, and offshore conditions can become challenging — rough seas limit access to outer reefs and make long-range navigation less predictable.

We monitor this window closely and build our expedition calendar around it. When conditions allow, the fishing remains exceptional. When they don’t, we adapt. Transparency is part of how we operate — we will always advise you honestly before booking.
