ANDAMAN BEST FISHING REPORT —
VOLCANO ISLAND 2025
Volcano Island fishing expedition 2025 — the first full video and report from our Andaman Sea season. Full video, best moments, gear, spots and practical tips, documented by Sparidae Fishing Expeditions. Giant Trevally on surface, remote volcanic reefs and the kind of GT fishing that very few anglers ever experience. This is our most viewed Andaman film to date.
The 2025 Volcano Island fishing expedition covered multiple banks across the Andaman Sea, focusing on popping for GT on the surface and jigging for dogtooth tuna in deeper water. Conditions were ideal — strong tidal movement, active bait on the surface and GT showing aggression throughout the day. Every spot in this report was personally scouted and fished by our team before any client joined the boat.
Volcano Island — Andaman GT Fishing
The Volcano Island fishing expedition operates in one of the most remote reef systems in the Indian Ocean. Barren Island — an active volcano rising from the sea — creates a unique underwater structure that concentrates bait and holds GT year-round. Fishing pressure here is almost zero, which means the fish are uneducated and surface aggression is naturally high. GT average between 7 and 25kg, with larger fish appearing regularly on the offshore banks.
The Andaman Sea window runs from November through April, when the northeast monsoon keeps conditions stable and the offshore banks accessible. April sits at the end of this window — water clarity is at its best, GT are active and the remote banks produce consistent surface action throughout the day. This Volcano Island fishing expedition captured exactly that dynamic across four days of filming.
GT Technique & Gear — Volcano Island Expedition
Surface fishing on the Volcano Island fishing expedition demands specific preparation. We run heavy popping setups — rods rated 100–200g, large reels loaded with PE6–8 braid and a short mono shock leader built to withstand abrasion on the volcanic structure. GT that have never seen a popper respond at full speed with no hesitation. The window between cast, surface disturbance and strike is often under five seconds — there is no time to adjust once the fish has committed.
Reading current edges is the most important on-water skill. GT patrol the edges of volcanic structure following bait, and the best drifts are often short and precise. On this April session, fish were active across multiple tidal windows and responded to both large cup-face poppers and pencil lures worked at speed. Dogtooth tuna showed on the jigging gear in deeper water alongside the GT popping sessions — making every day a complete multi-species experience on these extraordinary reefs.
Plan Your Volcano Island Expedition
The Volcano Island expedition runs in small groups across select windows each year. Logistics are demanding — two hours offshore, remote anchorage and precise weather windows — but the fishing is unlike anything available closer to shore. We maintain a maximum of four anglers per session to protect the quality of every drift and every interaction with these completely wild fish.
The Andaman window fills early each season based on tidal calendars and weather forecasting. If you want access to the remote banks around Barren Island, early contact is essential.
